Benefits of Breastfeeding
The Canadian Pediatric Society supports breastfeeding. Breastfeeding has
significant benefits for you, your baby, and the environment. Here are just a few of
them:
For Baby:

- Breastmilk is designed for your baby. It is the most complete and easiest digested form
of nutrition for infants. It has just the right amount of fat, carbohydrate, protein,
vitamins, and minerals.
- It is always fresh and ready and comes in a nicer package. No worry about contamination or
incorrect mixing.
- Increases protection against ear, chest, and stomach infections.
- Increases protection against allergies.
- Decreases the risk of adult obesity.
- Lowers risk of developing certain childhood cancers.
- Breastfeeding is associated with higher I.Q.
- Decreases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also called crib death.
- Promotes better jaw and teeth development.
- Prevents constipation and the diapers smell better.
- Decreases risk of developing diabetes.
For Mother:
- Helps the uterus get back to its original size and lowers the risk of postpartum
hemorrhage.
- Decreases the risk of developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer.
- Decreases chances of osteoporosis.
- Uses more calories so able to lose the pregnancy pounds easier and without cutting
back.

For the Environment:
