Admission

Please report to the Admitting/Patient Registration desk located in the Emergency Department Waiting Room on the west side of the hospital. Bring your Provincial Health Services Card, and any other insurance covering hospital care (e.g. Blue Cross cards).

Tell staff at the Admitting/Patient Registration desk before you are admitted if you want a semi-private, or private room.

All patients being admitted or having treatment in the hospital will be asked if they have been admitted to another hospital in the past year.

If you bring any valuables or personal things to the hospital, you will be asked to sign a form for release of responsibility, as the hospital cannot be responsible for articles left at the bedside.

Discharge Information

The health care team begins planning for your discharge from the time you are admitted to the hospital. If you may have problems caring for yourself on discharge, please tell the admitting nurse your concerns. You should consider your home situation and the amount of family support you will have.

A STEP (Short Term Emergency Project) nurse may visit you in your home to give you care after you are discharged. Also, a nurse from Home Care is available five days a week to arrange any long-term care that you may need when you go home. Preparing for Your Stay at the Brandon Regional Health Centre

As you are an informed partner in your health care program, you can ensure you are prepared for your hospital stay by following this simple checklist:

Do Not Bring

Expensive items of clothing or jewellery
More then ten dollars ($10.00) in cash

What to Bring

Medications you are taking right now (Please give these to the nurse when you first meet. All medications you brought with you will be returned to you when you leave.)
Electrical razors (must have a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) label)
Battery operated radios or stereos, if they have ear phones
Housecoat, preferably one that does not go over your head (if you have an IV line these housecoats do not work)
Slippers, preferably the no-slip type that fit well and are easy to get on and off
Box of Kleenex, soap, shampoo, skin creams, and deodorant that you like to use
Toothbrush, paste and denture cleaning supplies
Lip balm, comb or brush, and eyeglasses as needed

Try to bring the smallest suitcase possible because space is limited.

Patients who expect to be moved to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) are advised that only necessary items should be taken into this area, as storage is very limited. We suggest that your family take home unnecessary clothing and other items if you are moved to ICU.

Nightgown or pyjamas (preferably ones that open in front)

Miscellaneous

Birth announcements, address book pen, stamps
Watch
Infant car seat (mandatory by law)
If bottle feeding, a can of formula and a bottle (for teaching purposes)

On admission to the hospital, you will receive a starter pack with

8 sanitary pads
6 diapers

Please leave any valuables at home (jewellery, car keys, credit cards and bank cards, etc.) and do not bring more than $10 in cash with you.
