Intensive Care Unit

ICU provides critical care and treatment to patients that have a life threatening condition. The ICU team is responsible for the care of patients during their stay in ICU.  The ICU team includes doctors and nurses with special training, health care aides, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, unit clerks, physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, social workers and spiritual care givers.

Doctors are often available to discuss your loved one’s progress. Please ask the nursing staff to make arrangements to speak with the doctor.  When a very ill patient does not respond to medical treatment, and death is likely, we offer care and comfort to lessen suffering, and to allow for a peaceful death with dignity.

WHAT CAN THE FAMILY DO?

• Designate ONE family member to make inquiries about your relative. This person should then keep other relatives informed of your loved one’s condition. For inquiries call (204) 578-4690.
• All patients are asked to name a decision maker in the event they are unable to make health care choices. We will ask patients and families the difficult questions about Advanced Health Care Directives (living wills) and whether they would want CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). 
• Please leave a phone number where you can be reached so we can notify you of any major changes in your relative’s condition. 
• Take home your relative’s clothing, medications, and valuables. Ask friends and family to delay sending flowers, gifts and food until after the patient leaves the ICU.

WHEN TO VISIT

• Visiting is limited because all patients in the ICU require close medical attention. Nurses will assess the patient’s need for rest and schedule visits accordingly. Special arrangements may be discussed with the nursing staff.
• Visiting is not allowed during medical rounds: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. 8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
• We know you are worried about your relative but please restrict visitors to immediate family only. 
• For the safety of your children and all ICU patients, when bringing in children and infants, please use your good judgment.
• You are more than welcome to use the family waiting room. Because this room is available to all of families, please do not plan to sleep there overnight (see note re: accommodations).

HOSPITAL SERVICES

Spiritual Care:  When you need someone to talk to, this team can help you by just listening. They can help you work through decisions and life changes, pray with you or connect you with your own clergy or spiritual leader. Contact the staff to ask for spiritual care or call the Switchboard at (204) 578-4000.

Social Work: They can help with family conferences, patient and family suppor t / education, community resources, counseling and discharge planning. They are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:45 p.m. Contact the staff or call directly to (204) 578-4665.
