Ethics Committee
Are you facing a Health Ethics Dilemma?
-
If treatment options do not agree with my values - what choices do I
have?
-
How do I make the right choices for my family members if they are no longer able to
make choices for themselves?
-
What can I do when I feel like I am compromising my professional judgment or moral
beliefs in caring for a patient or client?
Mission Statement
The Ethics Committee is comprised of volunteers from Brandon RHA, Assiniboine RHA
and the community at large, who have a broad base of experience and training. The Committee
partners with others to provide education and consultation on ethics, for health care providers and
patients/clients/residents and their families; as well as to provide input into policies and
approval of research studies.
Vision Statement:
"Decision making guided by ethics principles."
Functions:
-
Education:
Provide ethics-related education for committee members, patients/clients/residents and
families, health care providers and community members.
-
Consultation/Advice:
Assist patients/clients/residents, family and professional staff to identify relevant
factors in the decision-making process, and to recognize the distinction between ethical and
medical management issues. Encourage shared decision-making and facilitate understanding of
the relative benefits and burdens of alternate choices. Consultation/advice shall be in accordance
with established procedures developed by the Committee.
-
Case Review:
Examine cases on a prospective or retrospective basis. (Prospective – attempts to
determine if current treatment decisions are conducted within ethically sound practices,
Retrospective - provides a forum for discussing past decisions, suggesting preferable decisions,
and making recommendations on handling cases in the future.)
-
Review/Approval of Research Proposals:
To review and ensure all research involving participation of human subjects meets ethical
requirements and has been approved by a recognized university prior to RHA approval.
-
Policy Review:
Review relevant policies to identify existing or potential issues that have implications
for ethical decision-making, and make recommendations accordingly.
