Since May 31, 2005, World No Tobacco Day, the following
Brandon RHA locations have Smoke-Free Grounds.
- Town Centre Administration Offices
- Brandon Regional Health Centre
- Fairview & Rideau Personal Care Homes
- Child Adolescent Treatment Centre
Since January 1, 2006 - All other Brandon RHA facilities, programs and community sites have been
smoke free.
The Brandon RHA is committed to providing leadership in health promotion and disease/injury
prevention. Smoke-free facilities and grounds ensure a healthier and safer environment for
everyone.
The FACTS:
- Tobacco is the second major cause of death in the world, currently responsible for the death of
one in ten adults worldwide (World Health Organization)
- Tobacco smoke consists of a mixture of 4000 chemicals with over 60 known
carcinogens.
- Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in our society
- 45,000 people die in Canada every year as a result of smoking. That is the population of the
City of Brandon
- Direct healthcare costs of tobacco use in Manitoba are approximately $130 million every
year
- After you QUIT for:
- 20 minutes your blood pressure drops to normal
- 24 hours your chance of a heart attack decreases
- 3 months your circulation improves and lung function increases up to 30%
- 1 year your risk of coronary disease is cut in half
- 5 years your risk of stroke is reduced
- 10 years your lung cancer rate cut in half
- 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a non-smoker's
