Tissue Bank of MB Changes
In the amendment, BRHC has been designated to report all deaths occurring at BRHC
(including deaths that occur in the Emergency Department) to our Local Eye Bank Technician, when a
patient is over 2 years old, and less than 80 years old.
The following steps must be followed for all deaths occurring throughout the
facility:
-
The nurse caring for the deceased patient must notify our local Eye Bank Technician
of ALL deaths within one hour of the time of death (even if the physician has discussed donation
with the family and they have denied, the nurse must notify the Eye Bank Technician).
-
The Eye Bank technician will call back to the unit and speak with the nurse. The
patient's medical history will be reviewed, to see if the patient meets donation criteria. The
physician may be called for further information.
-
If the patient meets criteria, the Lions Eye Bank technician will contact the family
or proxy.
-
The nurse will need to start the Eye Donation checklist.
-
The family will be approached by the Eye Bank Technician to inquire about their
wishes re: the possibility of the patient becoming an Eye Donor. Only if the family gives written
consent will donation proceed.
