“A Sense of Home” Campaign Ends – Team Thanks Western Manitobans for It’s Success
December 11, 2012 – Brandon – The BRHC Foundation Board of Directors and the BRHC Foundation’s “A Sense of Home” Campaign Committee have announced today that the capital campaign to build the Murray House cancer treatment residence has met the fundraising goal of $2.85 million and has officially closed.
The “A Sense of Home” campaign launched on September 29, 2011 to raise the capital costs of construction for a residence to act as a home away from home for patients and their families travelling to Brandon for cancer treatment. In December, 2011 the residence was officially named Murray House after a major leadership donation was received from the Murray Auto Group. Completely driven by public donations, organizers have called the campaign a community project in its truest form.
Gerry Walker, Chair of the BRHC Foundation Board of Directors says, “We are so thrilled that the “A Sense of Home” campaign has achieved its goal. The Foundation will be forever grateful for what the campaign team of Laurie Murray, Kerry Auriat and Karen Chrest has accomplished.” She adds, “Each and every person who donated or contributed to the campaign can take pride in the ownership of Murray House and know that it was built because people cared about people. It will be their enduring legacy.”
The “A Sense of Home” campaign team credits the sense of caring and community from Western Manitobans as the reason for the campaign’s success. “People need each other, communities need the support of each other, and this house represents that” says Campaign Co-chair Laurie Murray. She goes on to say, “I have been touched by the courage and grace people show in trying circumstances, and I have had the opportunity to see the best in people over and over again. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and I will be forever thankful.”
Construction on the 8 bedroom residence has begun at 521 Frederick Street in Brandon, with an estimated completion date of summer, 2013. Once completed, Murray House will see users from a large catchment area of Western Manitoba that extends from the U.S. border north to Swan River, and from the Saskatchewan border east to Portage la Prairie.
With the closure of the capital campaign, a separate donor fund has been established through the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation to ensure ongoing opportunities for the public to donate to Murray House.
Kerry Auriat, campaign co-chair and now a member of the BRHC Foundation Board of Directors, states “Today represents an end and a beginning. Our capital campaign is now complete and, thanks to supporters large and small, local and distant, we have achieved our goal. We’re going to build a great house!”

November 30, 2012 – Brandon MB – The Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation’s “A Sense of Home” committee has announced that Westman Communications Group has become a major contributor to the “Murray House” building project with a $100,000 donation to the campaign.
Westman is a customer-owned co-operative that operates cable systems in 36 communities. A leader in entertainment, communication and information technology products and services, Westman also owns and operates local radio stations 880 CKLQ and 94.7 STAR FM, which broadcast throughout Western Manitoba. Dave Baxter, President and CEO of Westman Communications Group states, “We cannot think of a better way of showing support for our communities than to be part of this campaign that will culminate with the completion of Murray House.” He continues, “Being away from the support network of family and friends during the difficult time of cancer treatment can be very stressful, and we hope that our support of this very worthwhile project can ease the stress of those situations in a significant way.”
Westman Communications Group generously supports its customers and their communities with donations and sponsorships for local events, in addition to scholarships and free educational television programming. Westman’s $100,000 contribution to the BRHC Foundation reaffirms their commitment to families living in our communities. “On behalf of the BRHC Foundation Board of Directors we would like to express our sincere gratitude to Westman Communications Group for their contribution to Murray House” says Foundation Board Chair Gerry Walker. “It is by and through the generosity of all our donors that Murray House is becoming a reality and we are very excited that Westman has committed to be among them.”
The “A Sense of Home” residence building campaign launched in September of 2011 with an initial proposed fundraising goal of $2.5 million, with that goal being increased to approximately $2.8 million in early November. Organizers anticipate that as a result of continued strong public support, the capital campaign will close by year’s end. The ceremonial ground breaking ceremony for the Murray House cancer treatment residence took place on November 15th, with construction by Brandon’s Excel Design & Construction expected to begin shortly. “A Sense of Home” Donation
October 11, 2012 – Brandon MB - McMunn & Yates Building Supplies LTD, along with its flooring store Jenkins Flooring located in Brandon, has generously contributed $100,000 to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation “A Sense of Home” Campaign. “We are so thrilled to announce the generous support of McMunn and Yates Building Supplies” says campaign co-chair Kerry Auriat. “We thank the management, staff and customers of McMunn and Yates, across Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan, for their contribution to Murray House and their commitment to a healthy future for all cancer patients and their families.”
As a company that stretches all across Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, McMunn & Yates understands the value of providing care and support to Brandon, and to the Prairies as a whole, and have been inspired to give back to the community that has been so generous to their organization over the years. “McMunn & Yates have always believed in supporting community projects that will enhance the lives and attend to the needs of all Manitobans. This why we feel it is important to bolster initiatives such as “A Sense of Home”, says McMunn & Yates President, Jason Yates. “One of the ways we want to contribute is to help build a comfortable home away from home for those who seek cancer treatment in Brandon. We are more than just a building supply company, we want to help build a healthy community.”
McMunn & Yates began in 1971 with the opening of their first store in Dauphin, MB. Shortly after, their store was hit with a devastating fire which could have been a crushing blow to their fledgling company. However, with the help and support of volunteers within their community, they were able to rebuild immediately. From then on, their company has grown to 16 retail locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, a distribution centre in Headingley, MB and a truss manufacturing plant in Dauphin, MB. McMunn & Yates provides a full range of lumber and building material sales to retail customers, commercial contractors and home builders.
The “A Sense of Home” campaign will help fund the construction of the Murray House Cancer Treatment Residence, which will provide accommodations for patients and visitors from all areas of Western Manitoba traveling to Brandon for cancer treatment. Now sitting at approximately the $2.47 million dollar mark, the campaign is fast approaching it’s proposed goal of $2.5 million. The Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation has determined that the capital campaign will remain active until the tender process is complete. The Murray House project went to tender on September 25th, with a closing date of October 16th, 2012.
The campaign committee has indicated that another major sponsor announcement is expected in the coming weeks. “The momentum in the community has been remarkable” says campaign coordinator Karen Chrest. “I think it speaks volumes about the cause, as well as the spirit of Western Manitobans.”

Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre Celebrates 50th Anniversary With $50,000 Donation to “A Sense of Home” Campaign
August 7, 2012 – Brandon MB – The Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation announces that Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre, in a gracious gesture of community support and in celebration of the company’s 50th Anniversary, has contributed $50,000.00 to the “A Sense of Home” residence building campaign. “We are so appreciative of this generous donation. Pik-A-Dilly continually demonstrates community leadership, and we congratulate them on reaching their 50-year milestone! This $50,000 donation will be part of a permanent legacy to the citizens of Western Manitoba”, says “A Sense of Home” Campaign Co-Chair Laurie Murray.
“We are very pleased to be able to participate in a significant way as a donor to the development of the Murray House cancer treatment residence,” explains Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre President, Don Main. “Cancer affects people of all ages, and certainly affects the demographic that our company most serves. As such, we have been long-time supporters of cancer related charities. We appreciate that 60% of our business comes from outside the City of Brandon, which falls directly within the user parameters of Murray House. This makes our donation the ideal opportunity for Pik-A-Dilly to give something back to the community that we have been so happy to serve for the past 50 years. Thanks to the support of all of our customers, and in keeping with our 50th Anniversary celebrations, we are proud to contribute to this very worthy project.”
The name Pik-A-Dilly has long been woven into the fibre of Brandon’s business community. In 1958, Frank and Shirley Main moved their family from Russell, Manitoba to Brandon and established themselves as the Lessee of the British American Oil Company (B/A) Service Station on the corner of 10th Street and Victoria Avenue – across from Brandon’s arena. The station was aptly named Arena Servicentre. It was in 1962 that Frank expanded his business to include the sale and rental of soft top folding campers and truck campers and quickly became a pioneer in the RV business. Soon after, the name of the company was changed to reflect the growing demand for the family-oriented RV lifestyle and officially became Pik-A-Dilly Trailer Sales. The business saw great expansion and numerous location changes throughout the 60’s and 70’s, with Frank and Shirley’s son Don joining the company in 1970. Don went on to purchase the business and become President in 1977 upon Frank’s retirement. Don’s son Ryan joined the company in 2006, and in 2011 Ryan was appointed General Manager of the dealership – becoming the third generation to take the helm of the company.
Over the years, Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre has been the proud recipient of many industry and business awards for outstanding sales and customer service. Company President Don Main has served the industry in many capacities over the years including stints as President of RVDA Manitoba, Chair of the Board of RVDA Canada as well as four years as the Canadian Representative to the RVDA of America. He was also awarded the Business Person of the Year Award by the Brandon Chamber of Commerce.
The “A Sense of Home” campaign will fund construction of the Murray House cancer treatment residence, providing a home away from home for patients travelling to Brandon for cancer treatment. The Pik-A-Dilly donation brings the campaign to $2.33 million in cash and pledges, with a projected fundraising goal of $2.5 million.

Brandon McDonald’s Owner Gives Back to Community With “A Sense of Home” Donation
June 1, 2012 – Brandon MB – The Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation’s “A Sense of Home” committee has announced that local McDonald’s franchise owner George Sheard has come forward as a major donor with a contribution of $150,000 for the “A Sense of Home” residence building campaign. “George Sheard's quiet humility and philanthropic generosity is immensely appreciated by the Sense of Home campaign. We are honored to recognize his involvement as a major donor”, says Campaign Co-Chair, Laurie Murray.
The desire to “give back” to the Brandon community and a personal cancer connection are two of the reasons that inspired Sheard to donate. “A number of years ago I had the opportunity to meet two women whose extraordinary friendship with one another moved me very deeply. One, a cancer survivor, and the other, her strongest supporter”, he explains. “Witnessing their adventure, as they called it, was very eye opening for me. They taught me that “giving back” was not really giving back at all as much as it was “getting back” ten-fold. They taught me the power of good karma.” Sheard, a single parent with two children, Ross age 25 and Emily age 17, also considers himself blessed that his children have grown up healthy. “We have been very fortunate … other than a few stitches from time to time throughout the hockey season, we have all enjoyed good health and our “adventures” have been few. I do know that other families are sometimes not as fortunate – that is why this project is near and dear to me.”
George Sheard began his career with McDonald’s in 1971 as a teen working at a location in Victoria BC. After majoring in Music at the University of Victoria for four years, Sheard began a dedicated career with the company in 1977, working as a corporate employee in various positions until purchasing his first McDonald's Restaurant in 2002. He purchased Brandon’s three McDonald’s restaurants in 2007, including the original Richmond Avenue location that had introduced the McDonald’s brand to Brandon in 1972, and added the Neepawa restaurant later that same year. Now having built the newest location on Victoria Avenue in March of 2008, George Sheard is the proud owner of 5 restaurants in Brandon/Neepawa, with over 250 employees. He has also served as a National Business Forum Vice Chair and the Western Business Forum Chair for six years. Recent franchisee awards include the People Award, Ronald Award and Perfect Execution Award, plus multiple awards for Outstanding Restaurants and Outstanding Contributor.
“My hope is that my contribution to this project will help families in need and help speed their recovery. I want to give back to the community that has given and continues to give so much to our family, and for the first time in my life I am financially able to have this opportunity.” – George Sheard
The “A Sense of Home” campaign will fund construction of the Murray House cancer treatment residence, providing a home away from home for patients travelling to Brandon for cancer treatment. Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with an estimated completion date of Summer, 2013.
The McDonald’s donation is one of the largest to date, and brings the campaign to $2.2 million in cash and pledges, with a total fundraising goal of $2.5 million.

“A Sense of Home” Reception & Design Unveiling
Donors and supporters from Brandon and all around the Westman region gathered last night in the atrium of the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre as the BRHC Foundation “A Sense of Home” campaign committee unveiled design plans for the “Murray House” cancer treatment residence.
Special guests of the evening were architects Barrie Ottenbreit and Bill Randa of Number TEN Architectural Group who presented their designs and vision for Murray House to those in attendance. In describing the residence, with features such as a large, light-filled staircase landing and two-storey windows, Randa explained, “These are people who are going through a crisis in their lives, and we wanted to create a welcoming, open and friendly place that would make them feel at home.” Partner Barrie Ottenbreit agreed, saying “we have all lost someone to cancer, and for that reason this project is very personal and moving for us.”
The main floor of the two-storey residence will feature a large common kitchen and dining area to allow residents to prepare meals and dine in small or large groupings, a comfortable living room area with fireplace and tv, and a multi-use library/conference room. Murray House will offer 8 bedrooms, each with one queen size bed and one single daybed, an ensuite bathroom, as well as tv, undercounter fridge and microwave. Two of the bedrooms are designed to be totally wheelchair accessible, with a full-service elevator making all levels of the house completely user-friendly. A spacious and fully equipped laundry room and family-oriented games room are highlights of the lower level.
The “A Sense of Home” campaign launched in September of 2011 with a goal of raising $2.5 million to build a home away from home for regional cancer patients travelling to Brandon for treatment at the Western Manitoba Cancer Centre. The service area for the Cancer Centre, and ultimately Murray House, reaches from the U.S. border north to Swan River, as far east as the Saskatchewan border and west to Portage la Prairie. The campaign has thus far raised $1.9 million in cash and pledges, with donations coming from the entire Westman community.
Construction is expected to begin this summer at the 521 Frederick Street location in Brandon.

The "A Sense of Home" campaign will fund construction of the "Murray House" Cancer Treatment Residence, an 8 bedroom residence which will provide accommodations for patients from around the region travelling to Brandon for cancer treatment.

NEW BRANDON CANCER RESIDENCE TO BE NAMED “MURRAY HOUSE”
Thanks to a major leadership donation of $625,000, the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation “A Sense of Home” campaign is pleased to announce that the cancer residence to be built at 521 Frederick Street will be named “Murray House”.
The donation is from the Murray Auto Group headlined by the Murray Auto Centre in Brandon, consisting of Murray Chevrolet and Murray Chrysler Westman as well as Clair and Millie Murray and Doug and Laurie Murray. Doug is the General Manager of the Murray Automotive Centre and CEO of the Murray Auto Group. The Murray family has been involved in the auto industry for 85 years, beginning in Souris, Manitoba before expanding to Brandon in 1960. The Murray Auto Group is not only one of Canada’s leading automotive groups, but the Murray family have long been pillars of the Westman community.
Doug Murray, CEO of Murray Auto Group states: “The Murray Family has had a long tradition of giving to worthy causes in our community, and supporting the “A Sense of Home” building campaign allows us to become more public with our charitable work. The Sense of Home Residence, now known as “Murray House”, is a perfect project for us to support. Even though the residence is located in Brandon, it will be supporting cancer patients and their families from rural Manitoba as they travel in for care. As more than half of our customer base is in rural Manitoba, we felt that this project supported both our own community and our customers. Cancer touches most of us, and most of us have someone close to us that have been affected by cancer. We hope that “Murray House” makes this experience with cancer a little less traumatic.”
Brian Schoonbaert, CEO of the Brandon Regional Health Authority states: “The amazing generosity shown by Doug and Laurie Murray and family demonstrates their families’ commitment to this community and allows the Brandon RHA to provide much more in terms of care and comfort for patients during their cancer journey.”
The Murray donation not only gives a huge financial boost to the BRHC Foundation’s “A Sense of Home” Residence Building Campaign, but provides the name to a residence that will offer a home away from home for the many patients who travel to Brandon from surrounding communities for cancer treatment. Design plans are presently being created, with building expected to begin at 521 Frederick Street as early as August 2012.
