Infection Prevention and Control
The Infection Prevention and Control program strives to ensure that best practices in infection
control are performed. This contributes to the best possible services, care and clinical outcomes
for all our patients, residents, and clients while providing a safe environment for staff,
volunteers, and visitors.
The Infection Prevention and Control Committee plans, implements and evaluates infection
prevention and control measures to reduce the incidence of acquiring and spreading infections, in
keeping with Accreditation Canada and Legislation Standards.
Did you know that performing hand hygiene is the single
most effective way to prevent infections?
Patients, residents and clients may be very susceptible to acquiring an
infection.
Hand hygiene includes using alcohol-based hand sanitizer or soap and water. Look
for hand sanitizer stations inside the entrances and throughout our facilities.
|
When to perform hand hygiene:
-
On arrival and before leaving the health care facility.
-
Before and after each patient/resident/client contact
-
Before and after handling food.
-
Before and after touching your eyes.
-
After using the toilet, blowing you nose or after covering a sneeze.
-
After handling garbage, diapers, etc.
-
Wash hands with soap and water anytime your hands feel or look
soiled.
|
How to wash hands correctly:
-
Wet hands with warm water.
-
Apply soap.
-
Lather hands well for at least 15 seconds.
-
Rub well between fingers, fingertips, thumbs, and back of hands.
-
Rinse thoroughly and dry hands well.

towel.
|
How to use hand sanitizer correctly:

Other Ways to Prevent the Spread of Infection:
-
Do not visit the facility if you are ill or have an infectious illness such as
chickenpox, scabies, impetigo or lice.
-
Do not sit on a patient's or resident’s bed.
-
Discard all used tissues immediately into a garbage container.
-
Staff should not come into work if they are feeling ill.
Is there an isolation sign on the door of the patient/resident/client you are
visiting?
This means you need to follow
special instructions for infection prevention and control precautions. Please ask at the
nursing station!
